Learn to Sail Courses


Upcoming Courses:

(minimum of 6 participants needed to run the course, registrants will be waitlisted for summer courses if it cannot go ahead)

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club offers Learn to Sail Courses in the summer School Holidays.

The course is aimed at children 8-15 year old and will teach kids to sail using a Plastic Optimist dinghy supplied by the Yacht Club. Past graduates of this course have gone to represent NZ in sailing, and many others have carried on enjoying sailing as a fantastic summer sport.

Participants must be able to swim 50 metres and be confident around the water. A parent or guardian will be expected to be available to assist their child.

The course costs $175 (incl. gst) per sailor.


Over the three days you will receive:

- 12 hours of sailing tuition (mostly on the water). 

- Use of the yacht club's Plastic Optimist dinghies. 

- Use of the yacht clubs facilities.

- Expert coaching by our Qualified Yachting Instructor.


Courses are limited to the first 12 registered and paid participants so be in quick as these course filled up fast last year.

Courses start at 10:00 am each day and run till approximately 2:00 pm.

On completion of the course participants will be awarded a Level 1 Yachting New Zealand Certificate and Sail Logbook.

For only a further $75 (incl. gst), participates will be able to continue using the Yacht Club's optimists on club days through to December 2021:

- With further Sailing Coaching on Saturday's - Rigging at 10:00 am and on the water at 10.30 am.

- Racing on Saturdays 1.00 - 3.30. (1300 to 1530)

- Privileges of the Yacht Club .
